Traditionally in a betrothal ceremony during Jesus’ time, a Jewish suitor would bring a cup of wine to his beloved, symbolically saying, “I offer you the cup of a new covenant. This wine represents my life-blood, which I am willing to pour out for you. I lay down for you my life… my heart… my ALL. Will you accept this cup from me? Will you give yourself to me, totally and unconditionally? Will you be mine?”


He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” Luke 22:20
Then He took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Matthew 26:27-28
